The IBM 7299 Star Hub transparently supports ALL features and
performance gains available on the newer IBM AS/400e Advanced Series Controllers and
5250 Emulation adapters, such as TCP/IP over 5250.
The IBM 7299 Hub has 2
Host Ports supporting 14 Device Ports available with either R-J11 or RJ-45 connectors.
Other features include Advanced Noise Filtering, LED Port Diagnostics, Configurable UTP
Pin Assignments, and a Field Replaceable wide-ranging Power Supply.
The following diagram
illustrates a typical application
of an IBM 7299 Active Star Hub.:
The iSeries AS/400 is connected directly
to the Active Star Hub with a
Twinax-to-RJ45 Balun.
The Balun is connected to the Twinax Host Port on the iSeries AS/400
and an RJ45 CAT5 or CAT6 Cable is connected to the RJ45 Host Port
on the Active Star Hub. A Balun is connected to the Twinax connection
on the Twinax Display Station or Twinax Printer and it gets connected to one
of the RJ45 Device Ports on the Active Star Hub with an RJ45 CAT5 or CAT6
Cable. The total length of the RJ45 CAT5 or CAT6 cable from the Active
Star Hub to either the AS/400 or the Twinax Device can be up to 2000 feet.
A Twinax signal over a CAT5 or CAT6 cable IS NOT limited to the 300 feet
limitation of an Ethernet TCP/IP signal.
